Project Topic Advisor – An OpenAI GPT for Project-Based Learning

What is a GPT?

A GPT is a custom versions of ChatGPT that combine instructions, extra knowledge, and any combination of skills. OpenAI have rolled out custom versions of ChatGPT that you can create for a specific purpose—called GPTs. GPTs are a new way for anyone to create a tailored version of ChatGPT to be more helpful in their daily life, at specific tasks, at work, or at home—and then share that creation with others. For example, GPTs can help you learn the rules to any board game, help teach your kids math, or design stickers.

In Project Pals, we took advantage of this new tool by OpenAI to create our Project Topic Advisor GPT, which is a friendly guide for generating project topics, driving-questions and support materials.

Some of the more complicated issues that students have difficulty with in project-based learning are: generating a driving question, coming up with the topics they need to learn in order to answer their driving question and finding reliable resources for investigating their topic.

The Project Topic Advisor GPT

Our Project Topic Advisor GPT is designed to assist both K-12 and university level students and teachers in developing effective driving questions for projects, focusing on grade-appropriate materials. Initially, the GPT will ask the user about their education level, distinguishing between K-12 and university. If the user is in K-12, it will further inquire about their specific grade level. Based on the education level, the GPT provides tailored assistance in three areas: generating a driving question, understanding the topics their subject entails, or generating project resources. For driving questions, it assesses clarity, scope, and relevance, offering guidance to refine them. In subject topics, it explores various dimensions and academic implications. For project resources, it suggests materials aligning with the project’s goals and educational level. The GPT maintains a supportive and engaging tone, ensuring users feel confident and involved in their project planning.
