Project Description

Student teams research a country using three distinct types of sources: AI tools, traditional research (books, articles, databases), and direct communication with peers from that country. Through systematic comparison of these sources, students learn to critically evaluate AI-generated information, verify claims across multiple sources, and understand the unique value of primary sources. The project culminates in a presentation demonstrating cultural understanding and AI literacy skills.

Why Use this Project?

  • Addresses Critical AI Literacy: Students learn to identify AI inaccuracies, stereotypes, and limitations—essential skills for the AI era.
  • Authentic Learning Experience: Real cross-cultural communication provides experiences that cannot be replicated through traditional instruction.
  • Develops Research Skills: Students practice source evaluation, citation, verification, and synthesis across multiple information types.
  • Challenges Stereotypes: Direct peer interaction confronts cultural assumptions and builds genuine intercultural understanding.
  • Builds Collaboration Skills: Team-based structure with defined roles teaches project management, communication, and conflict resolution.
  • Standards-Aligned: Meets Common Core ELA, ISTE, and C3 Social Studies standards while addressing emerging AI literacy needs.

What's Included

  • PHASE 1 – AI Research (Week 1): Teams select a country, develop research questions using AI guidance, and gather initial cultural information from AI tools.
  • PHASE 2 – Verification & Analysis (Week 2): Teams verify AI claims using traditional research sources, identify discrepancies, and analyze why sources disagree.
  • PHASE 3 – Direct Communication (Week 3): Teams interview international peers via video/email, collect primary data, and document authentic cultural experiences.
  • PHASE 4 – Synthesis & Presentation (Week 4): Teams compare all three sources, reflect on AI literacy lessons, and create presentations demonstrating critical thinking.
